Jim has over 30 years of management experience in commercial finance, private equity, and management . Among his past positions are:

• CEO of Altres Financial, a regional commercial finance organization he founded in 1987 and which was acquired in 1999.
• Managing partner at Capsource West, LP, a financial advisory firm focused on investment banking, financial restructuring, and recapitalization of small and middle market companies.
• General Partner at Next Stage Partners, LP, a private equity investment fund.
• Director of Corporate Development and Licensing at Storyrock, Inc., a software development and licensing firm.

Jim was instrumental in the formation of The Music School, LLC. In addition to being an investor, he served as a member of its board of directors from 2007 to 2009.

His roles as CEO, investor, and advisor at many successful companies have honed his in-depth, hands-on understanding of business strategy and organizational development; he has used his knowledge to aid a number of non-profit organizations. He has served as a director of various organizations,including the Association of Corporate Growth,the Risk Management Association, and Jazz Arts of the Mountain West
